I know it’s a bit early.
I have a little question for you:
I was just listening to Dennis’ farewell show and there are a couple of jokes about visitors to British Columbia having to wait five days before being able to consume alcohol. Was there such a law?

I believe so — It’s on my “to research further list”, maybe its something I can do after 10pm local — we have a current Covid law that says no booze can be served after 10pm. And that doesn’t look to be changing soon as yesterdays local election put the same bunch back in office. So I’ll enjoy my local craft brewed Pale Ale now while listening to some Benny.

You might recall that for over two years I have listening to Jack every Sunday in chronological order (starting halfway through the final Jell-O season).

I’ve always bounced around. The media player usually has things playing in order, but I start/stop it frequently as the mood changes.
Recently, I’ve taken to listening several episodes from 1939.

Hi, Mr. Openshaw!
Hi folks!
Hello, Laura.
I was asking Garth about BC “blue laws”.
So I see! (to borrow from Mr. Billingsley)
Thankfully I’ve been here more than 7 days so I can enjoy the fermented beverage of my choice.
Say, Laura. A couple of weeks ago, I was bemoaning the sameness of comedy podcasts…
I’m sure there are many good ones up there.
You know, they are basically all talk like in radio.
Hi Tom, Doug!
Rodrigo – Like a DJ
Or Howard Stern
My complaint was that I was wondering what Jack and Co. would parody had they made the show these days.
For instance, “Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood”:
Well, I’d imagine they’d have done The Avengers
Yeah, that too.
Maybe a superhero flick
RICK DALTON (Jack): Mr, Hassenpfeffer told me my career was like Phil Harris’ music…
With Mary Playing Mrs. Peel, I don’t see it
A lot of us have contemplated a recast of Star Trek with Jack’s cast.
CLIFF BOOTH (Don): How come?
Garth – Maybe Mary doing Mae West.
RICK: Turbulent, stagnant… abominable!
Mr. Benny we’re needed.
Dennis would have done a good impression if Bruce Lee.
And there’s a roll-on-the-floor hilarious fantasy on the old bulletin board at www.jackbenny.org of recasting THE ENTIRE CAST of Pulp Fiction with Benny characters.
And Kenny would have played Jughead Jones the previous season…
KENNY: Say, Jack. What’s a bigamist?
JACK: It’s how an Italian reacts to seein London!
JACK: It’s how an Italian reacts to seein London!
Ronnie and Benita were cast as the cocaine dealer and his pierced wife.
Hello everyone
Hi Neil!
MARY: At least you’ve got a red toupee. Don’t you, Arch?
Hello Laura and all. Cooking some eggs for dinner.
JACK: But you won’t get paid twice!
Doug – That sounds like a setup to a joke.
And I’m writing them in my head for various characters, but not burdening any of you with them.
So how’s everyone doing?
I actually didn’t choose a show for tonight. We can just chat, or I can take a request.
I’m enjoying my evening beer — un burboning myself.
Garth – Phil Harris would approve.
As long as I don’t end up with egg on my face. lol
So would Phil Marlow
Garth – I remember having a pretty good meal in the SF bar/restaurant where Dashiell Hammett is said to have done some of his writing.
Has anyone been watching the Antenna TV marathon?
I think Mrs. Day would refuse to let Dennis have to do with a Tarantino film, even if it’s a parody…
I would If I had a TV Antenna
Rodrigo – I think he may have been cast as the boxer.
Garth Same here.
Was there a boxer in “OUATIH”?
I know Mary would play Sharon Tate…
I’m trying to figure out what OUATIH stands for
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Oh I get it
I confess I haven’t seen that yet!
Antenna meet T.V. just be careful when Rochester plugs it in.
Maybe they would have parodied the West Wing
Wow, I never noticed the “DUBY” in the bushes before.
That’s the old “for sale sign” Do Buy!
Oh heck yeah!
Garth – Har har!
Jack goes trick or treating
Bobbing for sportsmen?
Wasn’t there one with Boris Karloff?
Let’s do one of those. Appropriate timing.
BRB
Mr. Benny? Are you sure you’re not Maxwell Stroud?
No!

ROCHESTER: Boss! Carmichael maxed out your credit cards on fish!

Watch2Gether lets you watch videos with your friends, synchronized at the same time. (5 kB)
JACK: Whaaat?
Why does Fred dress up as a pirate, I know why and so do you.
And it’s from the same time!
Say, are there any pics of Fred Allen broadcasting?
Rodrigo – A few, including this one from the Hoboken Historical Museum showing a uncredited singer from the Hoboken Four.
They got the date on the Sinatra pic wrong. It was actually in 1943.
For starters, Fred was on NBC by 1946.
1935 – Major Bowe’s Show with The Hoboken Four featuring Frank Sinatra
And… did Fred actually face the orchestra rather than the audience during his broadcasts?
The Sinatra pic comes with a snipe from “Songs by Sinatra” not the Fred Allen show.
Ah, that explains the CBS mike… I didn’t know Fred any guest spots aside from Jack’s show,,,
Who’s the fat guy with the mustache?
Jack Smart
I think he can be heard on the Christmas 1932 Linit show.
That was fun…thanks for suggesting it!
Thoughts on the show?
When did John Brown join the Allen troupe? In a 1936 episode he was playing a Radio City usher…
I think I might have heard that before. I remembered the ending. That was fun.
I need a doughnut!
I hoped I’d gotten the one with the guest star. Other shows just have Jack throwing a masquerade party at his house, and once at Andy Devine’s farm.
Tickets please!
Garth – I should send you one from Bob’s Donuts here. One of their 10″ ones. But it wouldn’t be as good as fresh from the fryer.
At least it would have been made on-site. Tim Hortons, our national coffee shop, hasn’t done that in years
An there is a Krispy Kreem thats 30 miles from me …
I read that, for the Linit show, organist Ann Leaf was not present in the same studio as Fred and the others but from a small studio located at the Paramount theatre in Times Square, about a mile or so away.
The trick I’ve learned is if you’re in line, watch what just came out of the fryer. If not, then ask what’s the freshest. Nothing like a warm Bob’s Donut. Or donut hole.
I like Entenmann’s are good!
Rodrigo – Not unlike the Lucky Strike commercials that were done from New York.
My heart still belongs to Robinette’s, a family-owned apple haus in my home town. And they still line up at this time of year for the donuts.
OK, what else for this week?
That was in the 40s and 50s. In 1932, West Coast broadcasts were prohibitively expensive.
My mother used to work in a proper bakery — the pies and and cinnamon bunst were great but the dougnuts were the worst I ever ate
I actually read that only in 1936, telephone {line leases were arranged to allow Hollywood broadcasts to be cheaper.
Take in mind that before May of that year, Jack was an NY resident.
Rodrigo – Similar to the TV episodes, where they had to go back to NY since they didn’t have the transcontinental coax.
True – Ann was elsewhere Wherlitzing away for the pleasure of the boss.
But they did broadcast the Canada Dry show from New Orleans for a bit.
He, Amos n’ Andy, Burns and Allen and the Marxes only did Hollywood broadcasts because they were filming.
When you look at the telephone lines in the 30s and 40s. They looked like clothes lines. lol
I know about Weems’ contractual obligations there.
Doug – I saw telephone poles in Kathmandu that had leaned into buildings because they kept putting up more until the pole tipped over.
Rodrigo – Yep, you got it.
OK, shall we call it good for tonight?
Allen would have appreciated that these days he wouldn’t have a studio audience imposed on him…
Rodrigo – True, but he would have abhorred a laugh track.
“cackling like geese”
There ya go
No — I’ve gone !
OK…I’m signing off. Have a wonderful holiday, and for those in the US, don’t forget to vote!
Vote early and often.
While fiction content in podcasts is severely lacking, Brad Strickland said he was doing some audio theaters.
Already voted
Good night.
Neil – Me too.
Great
Already voted!
Good nigh all!
