Laura finds the very first Jack Benny TV Show!!!!

Postby Jack Benny » Wed Mar 09, 2005 8:39 pm

No one has posted here for days  , so I guess it's up to me 8) ! Laura has been talking some about the additions to the video library, but so much has been added that it's wonderfully overwhelming. One show quietly entered the library without any fanfare. I looked at it and read the date, "1950." Well, that's darn early, I said to myself, isn't that from the fabled first season? I thought to myself, that would have to be a 45 minute episode - probably just an excerpt, better look at the runnning time ,"46 minutes" that must be the whole show!!! Wait one darn minute it says it stars Ken Murray and Dinah Shore  , but weren't they on the very first episode. Let me look at that date again, "10/28/50"! 10/28/50?  They only made four episodes that first season, so the second one probably came out in like December. Hold on a minute...wait a minute...Wait a Minute...WAIT A MINUTE!!!!!! LAURA FOUND THE VERY FIRST EPISODE OF THE JACK BENNY TV PROGRAM!!!!!!!

About a year ago I posted a dream of mine that the first season of the Jack Benny Program would come out on DVD. I thought it was just a pipe dream, but Laura has made 1/4th of that dream come true! Thank you Laura for the wonderful Video Library, and especially thank you for it's bright shinning crown jewel - The first episode of the Jack Benny Program.
Your pal,
Buck Benny

Sure did! :D Of all the DVDs in those recent donations, that was the one I rushed into my player to watch first. It's a great show, well worth the years of searching. You can see L.A. Speed Riggs do his chant, Rochester doing a fairly extended song and dance number, and hear Jack say that famous first line, "I'd give a million dollars to know how I look." You can also see how the set ended up looking, after the behind-the-scenes arguments about how Jack's house should look. To coin a phrase from Kenny Baker, "Gee...it was a thrill."

as an extra for the 1st season dvd set, you can grab the contract that made the show possible. The details start here http://tobaccodocuments.org/atc/71081673.html or you can just download the document itself http://tobaccodocuments.org/atc/71081673.pdf page 9 of the copy, document page 6 is most interesting in the 3 year plans they had for the show from the start and all the options cbs, the sponsor and Jack had.

Hi ya kid,

If you set up a free account, then you can download the PDF files right to your computer and print to your hearts content. I printed the entire first episode knowing that it would never be found....oh, never mind....leave it to Laura to let me waste 20 pages of my paper and ink. Oh, well....

Keep trying, I got it to work just fine. Maybe do what "Jack Benny" said and set up the account, or just do what I did and save it to your own hard drive right from this list... (I'm on a Macintosh, so I'm not sure how to do it on a PC...) I think all you have to do is "right click" on the link above, and then I think a menu pops up. There should be a choice for you to "download linked file as..." and that should do it.
good luck!
