The shows featuring the Colmans are some of my very favorite shows. I recently viewed "The Late George Apley" on TCM, a movie that Ronny and Benita mention on Jack's show several times. The movie is quite good, following the struggles of a tradition bound Boston aristocrat (Colman) to fend off what he sees as the encroaching vulgarities of popular culture that threaten his world. In one scene, he is telling his wife that he is off to attend a meeting that has been called to try to stop the erection of the first advertising sign on Boston common. His wife says something like, but dear, that's progress. Apley then says, " but my dear, do you know what the sign is going to say?...Grape Nuts!". I know that this movie was based on a stage play, but have no idea if the use of Grape Nuts was original to the play, or some inside joke by Colman based on his Benny work. Since the folks on this board are probably as well versed in all things Benny as anyone on earth, I thought I'd seek your collective wisdom. Does anyone have any idea?
