Radio episode with party: Dennis acts as butler with dialect

Postby Radioman » Wed Aug 05, 2009 10:35 am

Does anyone know the episode where Dennis is asked to serve as a waiter at a party, given by whom I can't remember. I believe Dennis is supposed to be assisting Rochester. Throughout the party scene, Dennis is speaking in a heavy dialect that I'm sure was hilarious then, but would be seen as very racist today (equivalent of wearing blackface, I suppose).

I don't believe the episode is on archive.org. Even though their list of JB episodes is comprehensive, I found that they don't have every single episode. I may have found it on this list: http://otrperk.com/jackbenny.cgi , but I don't know.

Anyone remember it?

This was the Jello Program from 11-23-41, when Jack has Dennis help Rochester serve Thanksgiving dinner to his guests. It seems Rochester's brother was supposed to help, but he doesn't show up, so Dennis puts burnt cork on his face and fills in for him. He does a very broad black stereotype, prompting Rochester to say 'That boy does the worst blackface I ever saw!'. To which Jack replies, 'I'd like to see you do Irish sometime'. It was all very funny if you put it in historical context.

"Yes, Phil. He's the only comedian who tells 'em and smells 'em at the same time!"

Thank you! I got to listen to it again and Dennis has so many hilarious lines in it. I always liked the episodes where Dennis did other voices, since he was such a talented, but underused, voice artist.

It was weird, though, seeing Dennis on the TV shows still doing the naive young guy routine, but in the body of an adult man.

That show was fresh in my mind since I had listened to it recently. Dennis Day is one of my favorite characters on the Benny show, although strangely enough, I don't care much for his singing. Nothing against his talent; I just don't like tenors. But he was so funny. Not only his character, but he could do great impersonations, and any dialect. The character he played was sort of like the one Gracie Allen played, and it aged with her. George Burns once explained that 'if you're dumb, you stay dumb'. I don't recall seeing Dennis after he left the Benny TV show in the 60s. I wonder what he looked like in his senior years.

Strangely enough, I like Dennis' character, but Gracie annoys me. Not sure why. I guess because you frequently get him in smaller doses. I don't know. I have a hard time listening to B&A though, because she just bugs me. Not very logical really, but it's how I feel anyway.

I agree with you completely.
