BENNY IS VOTED TOPS ON RADIO FOR 25 YEARS
Wins Trade Daily Poll of 300 Editors

By ANTON REMENIH
[from a column in the Chicago Tribune, Mar. 13, 1950]
More than 300 of the nation's radio editors picked Jack Benny, Waukegan wit, as the greatest radio personality of the last 25 years in a poll conducted by Radio Daily. In other words, Benny was voted the best entertainer in the history of broadcasting. He leads all current audience rating just as he has off and on for more than a decade.
Occasionally Jack stepped from the throne for such temporary such as Fibber McGee and Molly, Bob Hope, Edger Bergen, and Fred Allen.
It's interesting to note that the midwest, and especially Chicago, has produced more than its share of all-time radio greats. Bergen grew up here, attending Lake View High school and Northwestern university. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Jordan, originally of Peoria, developed their Fibber and Molly roles here. And Benny is from Waukegan. In fact Jack may return there if a telegram dispatched to his home town last week means anything. Recipient was Frank Kilbane, an old pal of Jack’s, who has a new job. The message: “Congratulations on your appointment as district supervisor of census for the 13th congressional district. Could I still be 39 in Waukegan? Would I get a better break on the income tax if I returned home by April 1?” Memo to Jack: Please advise Who’s Who in America it is in error. It gives your birthday as Feb. 14, 1894.
