question about specific Allen/Benny appearance

Postby mackdaddyg » Thu Jul 31, 2008 4:25 am

For years, I've had one of those Radiola lps with a bunch of Fred Allen / Jack Benny feuds. There's one on there that I've never been able to figure out the source.

The bit basically consists of Fred breaking down Jack's touring show bit by bit to see if it's worth the 50 cents or whatever it costs. He breaks Jack up a couple of times, particularly when, referring to paying a small amount for Phil Harris, replies "You drive a hard bargain."

Anyway, does anybody know what show this is from? I'd like to hear the rest of it, but that two or three minute bit is all I've ever heard.

Thanks.

After posting, I realized that I probably got some of the specific info wrong. That's what I get for posting too early in the morning. Anyway, if this makes any sense, I'd appreciate any info about this show.

Thanks.

Yes, that's from a show Jack did in New York at the Roxy Theatre. IIRC, a newsreel caught Fred Allen's surprise appearance onstage. It's a clip that's been used a number of places, and well worth looking for the video. Oddly enough, if you search for "Jack Benny Fred Allen" on YouTube, there's a Ray Stevens video that has a photo from the Roxy appearance on the index.

Thanks, LLeff!!!

Wow! I never would have thought to look for a video. I just assumed it was a radio broadcast. So I guess what I've heard is the audio from that clip. I'd love to see the video just to watch Jack laughing at Fred. Where does one look for this kind of thing?

Thanks again!!

Well, I know it's in the 1972 "Golden Days of Radio" special, and I'm sure it's been used in other tributes (just can't remeber off hand which has it vs. not). Anyone seen it in any of the tributes more recently?
