The Stalling Blows At Midnight

Many of us, I'm sure, are cartoon fans and know about the numerous connections between the Benny Show and Warner Bros. cartoons. But here's one I didn't know about, dealing with Carl Stalling, on Mike Barrier's web site:

MB: Did you ever do any composing for live-action features?

CS: I did one reel of a feature for Jack Benny, The Horn Blows at Midnight, and it was just as bad as the picture, which was a big flop. I didn't want to do it, but Leo Forbstein, the orchestra's general musical director—he'd hire all the musicians—and head of the music department, wanted me to. I'd played with him in Kansas City theaters, the Royal and Newman Theaters. So when I came out here, I liked it much better at Warner Brothers than at Disney's, because of that association. We'd known each other and worked together for years. He played violin and I played piano, and sometimes for the morning shows, that's all we'd have for an hour or so, and then I'd go up and play the organ.
