The Many Careers of Gladys Zibsco

Postby krledu » Tue Sep 25, 2007 4:08 pm

How many careers has Jack's girlfriend, Gladys Zibsco had? I remember two which were a waitress and a plummer. I'm currently listening to a 1948 episode where she fixes a pipe at the drug store. And was she played by Sara Berner?

Another quick question, I was listening to an episode where they are talking about Ronald Colman's new picture, A Double Life. They mention a term I didn't quite understand but was curious about. Mary's line is: Ronald Coleman was perfect to play the part of a Broadway star who was afraid to play a fellow. I know was a fellow is but what did she mean by that? And is that the correct word?

Don't you mean Othello?

Huh?

Maybe that is the word I was trying to figure out. I listed to that part about 100 times trying to catch the word but I couldn't. What does it mean?

I heard that program. Mary's line about Ronald Colman being perfect for the part wasn't said to get laughs. It was meant as a simple and deserved praise of Colman's acting ability.

In 1947, Colman starred in the film A Double Life, playing a professional actor named Anthony John. In the film, John throws himself so fully into a role that in real life he takes on the qualities of the character he plays on stage. Shakespeare's Othello is about an honorable man, Othello, who is tricked into murderous jealousy against his innocent wife, Desdemona, whom he kills. In the Colman movie, John takes the role of Othello, and it soon begins to dominate him offstage to the point that he begins to plot the death of his former wife, Brita, who is in the play with him.

Wow, I listened and listed to that part and never got the word Othello out of it. The movie kinda sounded interesting. Ronald Coleman won an Oscar for it didn't he?

Yup. "Best Actor" Oscar, and he also won a Golden Globe for the part as well. IIRC, when the possibility of Colman's character playing Othello first comes up, he tries to beg off, knowing how roles affect him--but he's persuaded to do the part anyway, and the film becomes a kind of Jekyll-and-Hyde tale (hence the title, I guess).

I wonder if her lawsuit against Phil Harris for using her picture on the music sheet for "The Thing" ever panned out in her favor

Sorry -- Gladys didn't get sued by Phil. Mary's sister, Babe, got sued :-)
