Jack's knuckle-duster

Postby shimp scrampi » Mon May 23, 2005 5:53 am

Jack often wore a pinky ring with a large, dark stone. You can see it in lots of pictures - including the one on the IJBFC home page and the Bouche sketch; also on a lot (but not all) of his TV shows. Is there some kind of story behind that ring?

We recently bought the first season of the Adventures of Superman starring the great George Reeves (my favorite - by far - of all the actors who played the role). I noticed that Reeves wore a similar large pinky ring. My guess is that it was just the fashionable thing for men to do back then. Probably doesn't signify anything more.

I had forgotten about this post I made. I did later found out that pinky rings were sometimes 'covert' symbols worn by gay men from the fifties through the seventies - I realize now that post might seem to be implying something or fishing for some dirt I honestly wasn't looking for! The question of Jack's sexuality is pretty well settled in my mind from all I've learned about him, and also, by the way, totally irrelevant to me. I just wondered if it was a special anniversary gift from Mary or a present from Joan or something, as he seemed to wear it more than any other article of clothing or accessory I've noticed.

Hey, if everyone who wore a pinky ring was gay, it really changes how I view all those movie mobsters...
