Jack's cast on the Danny Kaye Show?

Postby WaltP » Sun Jan 08, 2006 11:01 pm

I was just looking at a log of the Danny Kaye Show and found this entry:

http://otterprojectonline.info/pmwiki/F ... nyKayeShow
-----------------------------------
Date Aired : 45/10/26
Episode Number : 27
Available : Yes
Title/Plot/Host: Jack Benny Substitutes
First Line : Jack Benny with Mary Livingston, Rochester, Dennis Day, Bob Crosby and yours truly Don Wilson. Ladies and gentlemen, let’s go back to Saturday noon.

NOTE: This sounds like a Jack Benny Show and there is no mention of the Danny Kaye Show but according to http://www.radiogoldindex.com it is the correct show (8497. The Danny Kaye Show. October 26, 1945. Program #25. CBS net origination, AFRS rebroadcast. While Danny is on a U. S. O. tour, the cast of “The Jack Benny Program” substitutes.)
-----------------------------------

I'm questioning the authenticity of this entry. I find Bob on the show in 43 and joins the show in 52. Is there a possibility this is correct?

Well, this is what the Bible (Radio Golden Index) shows for that date and that seems right because Larry Stevens was substituting then for Dennis Day who was serving in the Navy. I see that Dick Joy was substituting for Don Wilson too on that show. When in doubt, go with the Bible:

8497. The Danny Kaye Show. October 26, 1945. Program #25. CBS net origination, AFRS rebroadcast. While Danny is on a U. S. O. tour, the cast of "The Jack Benny Program" substitutes. Jack has a chat with the ghost of Diamond Jim Brady, Stradivarius, and Hitler. AFRS program name: "Danny Kaye." See cat. #63935 for a network, sponsored version of this broadcast. Jack Benny, Larry Stevens, Phil Harris, Mary Livingstone, Frank Nelson, Eddie Anderson, Mel Blanc, Dick Joy (announcer). 29:55. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

63935. Pabst Blue Ribbon Town. October 26, 1945. CBS net. Sponsored by: Pabst Beer. While Danny is on a U. S. O. tour, the cast of "The Jack Benny Program" substitutes. Jack has a chat with the ghosts of Diamond Jim Brady, Stradivarius and Hitler. This is a network, sponsored version of cat. #8497. Phil Harris, Mary Livingstone, Frank Nelson, Eddie Anderson, Jack Benny, Larry Stevens, Mel Blanc, Dick Joy (announcer). 29:42. Audio condition: Good to very good. Complete.

This is the 3rd reference in the past month to "Radio Golden Index" I've seen as the definitive source of all things OTR.

Why is "Radio GoldIndex" seen as "The Authority" on OTR? Has Goldin done that much research or has he simply 'databased' all the currently available shows from catalogs, errors and all? http://otr-site.com has also done this, just without the show synopses. Also with mistakes.

I question the veracity of the date data because from my research on Bill Stern specifically, RGI still references dates from catalogs that I've corrected thru research.

Granted, the site has a lot of information, but if the information is based on misinformation, what good is it? Simply collecting masses of information does not an encyclopedia make. The data must be checked and corrected, too.

My reason for calling the Radio Golden Index the Bible is that it's always proven accurate for the shows that I've looked up. Now no database, no matter how comprehensive, is going to be flawless especially when all of these entries had to be entered by hand. But it's about as perfect a database as I've come across for something this old and pre-Internet.

Take the October 1945 show for example. Dennis was in the Navy until 1946. We know that. So he could not have been on an October 1945 program. This is confirmed by the Radio Golden Index entry that shows Larry Stevens, Dennis's replacement during that period, and not Dennis Day.

I know Dave uses "39 Forever" to buff out his information on Jack Benny. In turn, I use his site to smoke out the identities of some of the supporting players (i.e., who was active in what kind of shows when, etc.). Dave's site really is an amazing wealth of information (not to mention Dave himself). Is it "THE" source? Well, some people might say that "39 Forever" is "THE" source for Benny information. And while it is more complete than any Benny predecessor, it's not without an error here and there (hopefully not TOO many).

So I do highly recommend Radio GoldIndex as well. It's most definitely a fantastic resource.

I have this Danny Kaye broadcast and although it has a strange "feel" to it, there are some very good Jack Benny Show moments. Like when Jack, Mary and Phil are in a restaurant and Jack asks the waiter (Frank Nelson) for roast beef. Nelson exclaims, "Roast beef?! Don't you know there's a WAR on?!" Jack says, "That shows how much you know! The war was over MONTHS ago!" Nelson responds, "Not the one between you and me!"

Lots of references to Danny Kaye's picture "Wonder Man" in the broadcast (Jack of course is petulantly jealous about the praise that Mary and Phil give Danny Kaye.)

Mel Blanc plays the ghost of Hitler in this and Jack gives him a lecture about what his hatred and bigotry has cost the world.

Thanks all for the information. I've been curious about the Index since I've heard of it.

I would love to hear it. I notice a lot more episodes of DK are available now -- I might have to start collecting again.
