The mention of Lucille Ball makes me think of just how revolutionary I Love Lucy was. Forget about the use of three cameras and the use of Desi Arnaz in the husband role. Before Lucy, there were no women clowns (at least none that achieved any prominence). Gracie Allen was, I'd argue, a greater comedian than Lucy but she did not do the sort of physical comedy that Lucy specialized in.
Just think of how many of our greatest television comedy stars are known for their physical clowning and the list is pretty small (Jackie Gleason, Dick Van Dyke, Sid Caesar, Milton Berle, Carol Burnett). Besides Carol Burnett, I can't think of another woman. By the way, in his quieter way, Jack Benny was also a gifted physical actor but where Milton Berle or Jackie Gleason often required more flamboyant gestures to get laughs, all that Jack needed was that pained pitying look to the audience.
