Thurl Ravenscroft, 1914-2005, R.I.P.

We just lost Thurl Ravenscroft, probably best known to Jack Benny fans as a member of the Sportsmen Quartette. He was also the voice of Tony the Tiger, and sang "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," and...

Hey, I'll leave it for someone else to list even more credits for Thurl here on the forum. After losing him, along with Frank "Riddler" Gorshin, and Howie Morris ("Your Show of Shows," "The Andy Griffith Show," et cetera, et cetera, et cetera... ), all in one terrific week (Yes, I'm being sarcastic!), I'm so flippin' depressed right now that anything else I write would be unprintable here.

I had the privilege of interviewing Thurl last September. He was one of these really warm, lovely people and I deeply treasure the opportunity I had to spend a little time with him. And as I think I've said previously, he could still pin you to the wall with the sheer force of his unbelievable bass voice. Thank you, Thurl, and godspeed.

Much like Mel Blanc, Thurl Ravenscroft will always be special to a couple of generations of kids, because his voice was inside our heads and tied to special memories before most of us even knew who the heck this fine gentleman was. Disney rides and movies, the Seuss cartoons, Tony the Tiger, and so much more. The sound of magic, indeed. Thanks for all the fine memories, Mr. Ravenscroft.

Sad news. Just last April my wife and I visited Disney World (where our daughter works) and toured the "Haunted Mansion," where Thurl's distinctive voice rings out loud and clear. I'm sorry to see him go.
