Probably old news, but Leo Kottke (guitarist and frequent Prairie Home Companion guest) sings once in a while, and one of the songs includes:
"Ring Ring
Doorbell rings
Baby come on in
Got Mel Blanc on the radio..."
Which really surprised me. Seems to set the song way back in the past. But it's better than "Got Rush Limbaugh on the radio"!
(I'm not sure who wrote the song.)

Leo Kottke writes almost all of his own stuff. I believe that is an original.

I think the situation was, someone needed to be "on the radio" and there was only room for two syllables-- so Dr. Laura, Casey Kasem, and Vin Scully were out.
But Rick Dees would have worked...

I made the 25-foot hike over to pick up the CD booklet and I can now tell you the song is called "Rings" and it is by Eddie Reeves and Alex Harvey.

D'oh. I even have that CD in my own collection. That's what I get for not "making the 25-foot hike" to look it up for myself!!

I just heard an earlier version of that song on Dick Bartley's Saturday night rock and roll oldies show, and instead of "got Mel Blanc on the radio" it was "got James Taylor on the stereo."
That version was by Cimarron, and Bartley said it was later done by Poco.
Suppose the next time around it will be "got Madonnna on the video"?
