Actually, Don DID do a gay-oriented gag, but not on Jack's show.....

On a WWII-era episode of "MAIL CALL" (an AFRS variety show performed and broadcast specifically for servicepeople overseas, like "Command Performance" and "G. I. Journal"), Don was the series announcer. Bob Hope was the M.C. of one episode, and Bob and the cast are doing a pirate sketch. In the middle of the sketch, Don appears and starts yelling, "Don't make me go up and down, don't make me go up and down, PLEASE don't make me go up and down!".....Hope asks, "Who ARE you?" and Don yells (in the most feminine, gay-stereotyped manner that you can imagine), "Oh, just a big fat wave!". As the studio audience is ROARING with laughter, Hope ad-libs, "He does that TOO WELL!", and the audience roars even louder!

And what's even more complicated, in hindsight, is that I've heard assertions that at least 70% of the WACs/WAVEs were lesbians. Listen to some of the Benny shows where, at the end, they're soliciting for volunteers to the WACs. You had to be a certain age, unmarried, no children, etc. Gives a whole new spin to some of the jokes Jack did about being the "pin up boy" of the WACs.

Well, I'll be doggoned...

On the 2/3/52 show, towards the end, Don's doctor reports that Don came out of the closet.

Quite something for a man who was married 5 times.
