Does anyone know what the "Grass Reek" joke was SUPPOSED to be? It was at the very end of the show, (What writers call a "Gag Tag,") which could be dropped if the timing of the (live) show was running long.
After Mary's flub, the audience was laughing so hard and long, that eventually Jack improvised a joke about Mary going back to the May Company, and then said, "Goodnight folks, we're a little crazy." Then they went off the air, while the audience was still laughing. Of course Mary's flub was so funny it dwarfed whatever the joke was supposed to have been, but my curiosity is aroused. Since it was a question about his car, was it a "Maxwell" joke? Was it a reference to something else earlier in the show? Was it something about Amos & Andy, his guests for that night's show?
The set up was something like:
Mary: "Jack, there's one thing I don't understand. How could you possibly have hit his car when it was up on the _grease rack_?" But, of course she accidentally said "Grass Reek" which put this show in radio history.
