The SPECIALS/Jack Benny Times Jan-April 2009

Postby shimp scrampi » Tue Jan 20, 2009 4:47 pm

Since the big news is official - a big congratulations to Laura and by extension the rest of the IJBFC on seeing the Jack Benny Specials preserved! It's wonderful that we'll all be able to see them, but even better in my book that the videotapes have been transferred to modern archival materials ensuring that they'll be around for generations to come. Laura jumped through a lot of hoops that would deter lesser souls to make this happen, so huge kudos are in order!

Love the rest of the issue too, the Ernest Maxin interview is tremendously informative, plus Jack Benny in Dogpatch, how funny!

DVDs for club members

Postby CBSTelevisionCity » Wed Jan 21, 2009 12:09 am

I read that there is a $10 donation for each DVD made for a club member. What is the address to send that to, along with the particular show request?

And I was wondering which of the "new" specials now available are in color?

Thanks, William

CBS/William - all the info on the library is at the top of the page here:

I'm pretty sure all the new specials are in color, including the first one with the Beach Boys that shows up as a bad b/w copy on all the "public domain" commercial DVDs.

Hi folks,

Thanks so much for your appreciation...I'm just getting in the first orders for these and it's great to be able to share my excitement with folks who are equally enthused.

Yes, all the news specials are in color (sometimes very strikingly vivid color!).

The Jack Benny / Star Trek connection

Postby Jhammes » Tue Feb 10, 2009 8:47 am

The U.S.S. Enterprise would encounter many an obstacle during it's "five year mission"... who knew the 12/01/66 Jack Benny Hour would be one of them (pre-empting that night's Star Trek)?

Mr. Spock: Your insistence on pursuing a serious career as a concert violinist is most...illogical.

Mr. Benny: Oh, SHUT UP!

Kirk: Bones...that man...is he--?

McCoy: He's sharp, Jim!

Jack: NOW CUT THAT OUT!

Isn't this the point when Mahlon Merrick starts playing the 'Look Sharp March'?

Consider the logic: The 12/01/66 Jack Benny Hour pre-empted the usual Star Trek broadcast. Four years later, Jack would guest (briefly) along with Lorne Greene and - yes - William Shatner in a scene from "Swing Out Sweet Land" (November 1970). Both specials aired on ST-TOS broadcast home NBC. Does this at least allow for a kinda sorta tenuous connection with Jack and Star Trek?

Bones: Dammit, Mr. Benny, you're a comedian, not a musician...
Benny: Oh... GO OPERATE ON SOMEONE...
