Waukegan Wisecracker

I just found this article on the Time Magazine/CNN site about Jack and the smuggling case. I thought this sounded pretty harsh. It makes Jack sound as if he desevered what he got. I was wondering if this was how the majority of papers and magazine ran coverage about the event.

The few wire service stories I've seen were fairly brief and to the point.

In reading this, I couldn't help but think how it'd be like if it happened today. Satellite trucks with live coverage. Paparazzi cha$ing after him. Larry King intensely querying a standard line-up of guests, especially if they had nothing relevant to say ("Cris Angel, what do you make of this?"). Bloggers pontificating because, well, bloggers don't do much else. YouTube and lame SNL parodies.

The 30s were a quieter, gentler place. Jack, you were lucky.
