Origins of the "Sportsmen" Quartet name?

This question came up in the last chat. Is there a reason why the Sportsmen were named the "Sportsmen"? The "Quartet" part is pretty easy to explain...

I wish I could answer the question. Since I can't, I'll post this while we're on the subject:

RUGGLES PROGRAM Signs Miss Ware, Popular Quartet
Linda Ware, young song star of the stage, screen and radio, and the popular Sportsmen Quartet of Hollywood will appear tonight as regular members of the cast of the Charlie Ruggles Barrel Of Fun program on KMJ at 6:30 o'clock.
Miss Ware, perhaps best known for her performance as costar in a recent Bing Crosby motion picture, made her debut as a top-flight vocalist at the age of 11 by singing a solo with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. More recently, she appeared as soloist in the Hollywood Bowl with a 100 piece orchestra conducted by Leopold Stowskowski.
She has starred in several motion pictures and appeared as a guest artist on leading radio shows.
The Sportsmen Quartet has sung in more than sixty major motion pictures in the past three years, mong them Tin Pan Alley, No, No, Nanette and Sunny.

Rudy Vallee and his Connecticut Yankees and the Sportsmen Quartet will conclude a series of three appearances on the Treasury Star Parade with a fifteen minute program beginning at 9 P. M.
The music will include The Red White and Blue, Let's Put Out The Lights, Grandfather's Clock, Where To? and a medley of war songs.

The Sportsmen name was adopted in either late 1937 or early 1938. According to Bill Days and Max Smith, there was really nothing significant to the name. They drew up a list and they all agreed on The Sportsmen name.
