"Gasoline Alley," Frank Nelson, and the Tout

Postby Brad from Georgia » Sat Jul 14, 2012 10:27 am

An Internet friend alerted me to the fact that the comic strip Gasoline Alley (http://www.gocomics.com/gasolinealley/2012/06/29) is currently running a story arc in which Frank Nelson and the Racetrack Tout both appear. Maybe more Benny-show caricatures are in the wings....

All I saw was earlier in the week was the guy wanting to watch The Horn Blows at Midnight. Maybe more coming, or maybe I didn't go back far enough.

Thanks so much for sharing this! It was perfect--the cartoon even looked like Nelson, and you could just hear him and Sheldon Leonard supplying the dialogue...

I can't help but wonder how many "Gasoline Alley' fans are reading this series and picking up on the JB reference!

Now I found it. Didn't realize the link went to the beginning of the story arc. Thought it was at the end.not familiar with Gasoline Alley but it's cool to see a fan of Jack out there. Unfortunately I don't know that very many people catch what's going on.

I didn't even realize that "Gasoline Alley" was still being written! I thought that this cartoon started sometime in the 1920s, but according to Wikipedia it's been around since 1918.

So glad that it's still around. Apparently, its current creator is a Benny fan! Thanks again, Brad from Georgia, for alerting us to this!

The Gasoline Alley cartoonist, Jim Scancarelli, is a big OTR fan with a collection of shows he started in the 1960's on reel to reel tapes.
