Has anyone ever seen...???

Postby Doconicus » Wed Jan 28, 2009 8:32 am

When I was a little kid, there was a documentary about hollywood and WWII. In it there was a scene where Jack Benny brought his car in to be recycled for the war effort. The car exploded and fell apart etc. and he said "Well... it never did that for me." Does anyone know where I can find this? I was explaining to my wife and friends and would love to let them see it online.

You know, I've seen the clip but don't have context on it. I know they did it as a publicity stunt (that's when they had to go and find a Maxwell to donate, because Jack's radio Maxwell never was more than either a collection of sound effects equipment or Mel Blanc), so my instinct says to turn to Movietone News first. Can't say what the documentary could have been...there are so many about WWII.

At least I know now that I didn't imagine it.

Good instinct Laura - here's a Movietone news continuity sheet that seems to match, October 20, 1942. Weird note: "No Sound or Speech on first take as Benny refused to talk"! Wonder what that was all about!
