I've just finished listening to three appearances by Dennis on The Kraft Music Hall with Al Jolson. What's remarkable is in all three, many of the jokes are about Jack. I suppose it was difficult to joke about Dennis himself but Jack's character was an easy target for the writers.
Dec. 9, 1948 has Dennis imitating Jolson, Ronald Colman and he does Clancy Lowers the Boom. Perhaps the 'Dennis Day' character was grating on him as he insists on tossing in 'McNulty' when referring to himself. Or he felt he was like the old-time vaudeville stars on radio who joked about their fake names.
Feb. 2, 1949 has an unusual opening. Instead of the theme, it starts with Jolson talking to Jack (unheard) on the phone to make sure Dennis knows he doesn't get paid for singing. Later in the show, Dennis is calling Jack (unheard) and we get a toupee joke.
May 5, 1949 has Dennis doing his Titus Moody impression in what sounds like an old two-man vaudeville routine.
