From the AP WIRE, 1951...

JACK BENNY PICKETED
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 29 (AP) — They picketed Jack Benny yesterday, but while the pickets walked back and forth on the sidewalk they listened to the Jack Benny show over a portable radio.
In addition to the radio, the pickets carried a sign reading "Jack Benny patronizes the nonunion Hillcrest Country Club."
Officials of two A. F. L. unions said Benny has been crossing their picket lines at the club. Benny belongs to the A. P. L. Screen Actors Guild.

BOB CROSBY HAS DAUGHTER
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 29 (AP)—It's another girl for the Bob Crosbys.
A daughter was born to the bandleader's wife Saturday. They now have two girls and three boys.
Brother Bing has four, all boys.

I have a photo of members of the Paul Whiteman show (comedically) picketing Jack in New York (early 30s, of course) because the rebroadcast of Jack's show was at the same time as their show and was taking away all their listeners!

The Whiteman orchestra should never have done anything to give Jack Benny that kind of attention if their jobs were dependant on the ratings. Considering that a performer could be fired for smoking the wrong brand of cigarette (when a cigarette manufacturer sponsored a program), it is possible that those musicians were reprimanded later.

It's a joke, son. It was a publicity gag.
