When people think February, they immediately think Valentines Day. What many
don’t know is that February is special for another reason. On February 14, 1894,
a man named Benjamin Kubelsky was born. He later changed his name to Jack Benny and became a national institution in comedy.
Ask any Creek teacher if they’ve heard of him and you may hear a story or two. For 20 years he was the star of The Jack Benny Program, a radio show that show cased Jack dealing with problems with the cast of his radio show. He established his character as a cheapskate, a character which has been mirrored many times over in TV and Movies over the years.
The reason this man is the main subject of the column is that he was one of many comedians and stars of the golden age that are practically ignored by today’s generation. Nowadays kids would rather watch un-original reality shows spurting from MTV every other week than listen and watch the things their grandparents watch. It’s important to remember the same comedians who inspired the greats of today. Of course some might say that’s completely lame and they’re way off. They’re the same people who cry through the night if they miss an episode of Laguna Beach. If that’s not lame, then I’m a monkey’s uncle. So this February, log onto You Tube, and search “Jack Benny” and watch a clip. There will be no disappointment.
In film news, director/writer Kevin Smith shows his acting chops by co-starring in the romantic comedy Catch and Release. The film starring Jennifer Garner, Smith, and Timothy Olyphant, is the new film by Susannah Grant, writer of Erin Brokovich, about a woman’s attempt to rebuild her life after her fiancée has died, but ends up finding out more about her fiancée then she though she knew. Catch and Release is probably one of the best pictures of 2007 so far.
What about the best pictures of last year, well they’re competing for the gold in the Oscar race. Among the nominees is 6 time snubbed director Martin Scorsese. His film The Departed is up for 5 Oscars, including Best Director, and it looks like he will finally get the statue, unless the academy decides to give another one to Clint Eastwood, just to make people mad. Many of the year’s greatest films were snubbed. Ben Affleck wasn’t nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Hollywoodland, and that really blows my top. On the positive side, many great films got nominated such as Little Miss Sunshine and Dreamgirls. Borat, the years most controversial film, got only one nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. I’ll be watching every last minute, and if they give Clint Eastwood the Oscar for a third time and snub Scorsese again, I’ll be so insane that my next column will be written from a mental institution.
Maybe, the upcoming films of 2007 will cheer me up. Of course they will, because the line up is perfect. Top prioritiy: The Simpsons Movie. I’ve waited so long for Homers big screen debut, and from all the secrecy surrounding the plot, it makes you even more anxious. The sound of hearing D’oh in THX surround sound will be great.
There are also many others that are being released such as the new Michael Moore film Sicko, Rob Zombies reimagining of the horror classic Halloween, Spider Man 3, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Reno 911: Miami, and more. The best part of the 2007 is that no Mel Gibson films will be released and only one more year till we find a more competent Commander In Chief.
Fun Fact You Wish You Knew Before I Told You:
Sean Connery got his first American acting gig on The Jack Benny Program. Before there was Bond, there was Benny.
