Groucho does a Jack Benny impression?

Postby Brad from Georgia » Mon Dec 06, 2010 6:54 am

I'm not sure about it at all, but we were watching A Night at the Opera (1935) on TCM, and in the final opera sequence, when Groucho as Otis P. Driftwood makes a speech to the audience assembled to hear Il Trovatore, he winds up his spiel with a very Benny-esque "Play, Don."

Oh yes..."Play Don" (referring to Don Bestor) was a surprisingly popular catch phrase that was originated by Jack, and I've always liked that Groucho connection.

What's really sad is that I completely missed the "Play Don" reference until earlier this year when suddenly I was apparently paying attention and it hit me!
