comedienne Jack Benny

I took a look at a historical photo book about Fullerton California, in Arcadia Publishing's "Postcard Series."
The caption writers pointed out several errors on old photos, such as misidentification or misspelling of street names. But the photo of the Fox Theater (I can't remember if it had BECOME the Fox yet) shows a banner promoting "Buck Benny Rides Again." The caption points out that the movie starred "comedienne Jack Benny."
I guess somebody found "Charlie's Aunt" convincing...

Speaking of Charlie's Aunt, did you know Jack won an Oscar for it? Bob Hope presented it at the 14th annual Academy Awards on Feb. 27, 1942.

Skirted Oscar Given Benny
HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 27—(INS)—Comedian Jack Benny is able to hold his own with the best of them in Hollywood today.
For his comedy role in "Charley's Aunt," he was singled out for special honors at filmdom's Academy dinner and presented with a skirted Oscar with a cigar in its mouth as the best selling gallus-wearing sweater girl.
Quipped Benny: "It caught me with my gagas down."

Since you want to know these things, another wire story says the skirt was red.
