Jack in PAPER MOON: Two entertaining mistakes

Postby kurt » Tue May 04, 2004 4:24 pm

In the now-classic film "Paper Moon," Tatum O'Neal's character, Addie, is shown in one scene listening to Jack's radio program.

It probably would have been more typical for the time period, 1933-34, to show her listening to Amos 'n' Andy (They were still on every weeknight at that time, too.) However, director Peter Bognadovich wanted to add some authentic 1930s atmosphere, and what better way, instantly recognizable to 1973 movie audiences, than a Benny program?

There are two mistakes present, however. One is that cheap hotel rooms in the Midwest at the time usually didn't include radios.

The second (and hopefully, someone can provide the answer here) is that the program excerpt is from quite a few years later. Jack is complaining about Fred Allen to Don Wilson.

Does anyone know the air date of the excerpted program?

I don't know the exact date, but the fued sarted in '37 so it would have to be 1937 or later. I can see why they used a later show though, the episodes form 1932 to about 1936 or so had and continue to have very poor sound quality, but many episodes form 1936 and later often can sound like they were recorded yeaterday, or at least the day before yesterday!
