Thinking it over, none of the Lucky Strike commercials actually annoy me.

A cigarette commercial on the Abbott & Costello show told listeners that doctors smoked Camels more than any other brand of cigarette.

Probably the reason is because the show made fun of them.

From what I gather, G.W. Hill and his successors liked strident, hard-sell, repeat-until-it's-ingrained-in-the-brain advertising, the very opposite of the Jell-O ads. But the spots become a little more palatable when, 10 minutes later, you hear the audience laughing when Don Wilson pretends he's one of those endorsing tobacco buyers, or the catchphrases are worked into the script as gags.

I think the ones I like less are the obviously recorded ones in the '50s. There's no life in them (kinda like Mary's recorded performances).

How about all of them?
I can't stand any of the commercials. Especially nowadays. 10 - 20 minutes of commercials, 5 minutes of program at a time!

Okay. How about explaining why? For example, the musical spots in mid-programme. What's wrong with them?

Good heavens...nothing's worse than the Lucky Strike commercials from the later '50s episodes with the emphasis on how "it's toasted". It's a dumb idea to start with, the commercials seem to go on forever with that ridiculous song ("it's the toasted <clap clap clap> cigarette!"), and Don Wilson's pre-recorded patter sounds like his heart really isn't in it.

I far prefer the earliest Lucky Strike ads that played up the "LSMFT" slogan with the sound of a telegraph giving the slogan a military cadence.

Went with the double-talk option but the "cleaner, fresher, smoother" (circa 1952..?) is incredibly grating on the ears. They are way too loud.

I actually don't mind the "doubletalk" commercials so much. For one thing, there weren't that many of them. For another (much better) thing, they led to a very funny incident on the show between Jack and Dennis, where Jack says something to Dennis about maybe expecting a little something extra on his paycheck, and Dennis replies with, "Words, nonsense, doubletalk," followed by a few seconds of gibberish as only Dennis Day could deliver. I wish I could remember the exact episode; it was a glorious moment.

There is one type from (at least) the early 1950s. One I just listened to (from June 3, 1951) had the "Go happy, go lucky" jingle with music. A man sings a jingle. Then suddenly the music stops and the man says in a monotone

"You bet. Luckies taste better than any other cigarette."

Followed by a woman who sings another jingle. Then suddenly the music stops and she says in a monotone

"And you'll agree. Luckies taste better than any other cigarette."

I think these commercials are not really annoying, but creepy. I feel that it is some kind of mind-control experiment.

I suppose, any commercial is.

I'm not annoyed by any commercials that aired during the series, but concerning the 'backwards' lines during the early 1950's episodes, hearing ANYTHING in that form is extremely creepy, especially if they are unexpectedly heard (for a reason which I will not discuss), BUT, in the 11/4/51 episode, I used a special tape machine to hear exactly what that brief talking was and it said words to the effect of "...Take the nose test, the throat test (in a none-too gentle jab at Camel's Nose and Throat Test' commercials)and the taste test, and we guarantee that you'll stick with our brand" Has anyone heard any different versions of this 'backwards' message?

None of them bother me as much as the ones from the early 1950s that say something to the effect that more college students smoke Lucky than any other brand and more college students start smoking Lucky strike as their first cigarette, which is just an absolutely horrendous thing to brag about!
