Shows where Jack gives his true age...

Postby Maxwell Stroud » Sun Jul 25, 2010 6:40 pm

I was just listening to the Ford Theatre version of The Horn Blows At Midnight. There's a part where Ethanial says he's 355 but tells everyone that he's 339. Later on Claude Raines repeats the 339 age but mentions some question about that. The show is from 1949 so Benny was 55 at the time.
I know that there are other shows where either his real age or real year of birth were given. By any chance is there is a list of these shows?
Another list I'd like to see is the list of things that Jack's eyes are as blue as. The left shoulder of a right handed ice-man, etc...
If I've told you once I've told you five times...

There was an episode of "The Danny Thomas Show" in which Jack asks Rusty (Danny Williams' son, played by Rusty Hamer) how old Rusty thinks he is. The answer was a quick, "64."

In a TV show that included a "Si-Sy" routine, Jack is at the airport (I think) when Frank Nelson as the announcer says that his flight is "number 39."

Jack smiles and murmurs, "Flight 39. WHAT a coincidence."

And the announcer says, "It's really Flight 64. We have OUR little secrets too."

Mary: If you keep this up, you won't live to be forty.
Jack: I'm forty-two now!
Mary: Boy, was I hot!

Bob Hope when he was a guest on the 12/4/62 JB Program as part of a long string of quick jabs at Jack he says that it took Jack 68 years to get to the age of 39.

I was listening to one titled "Jack Renews his Drivers License" from 1951. Jack asks the clerk to guess his age and she says "61" at which the audience and cast cracks up.

I vaguely recall an ep where Phil is playing pool, and in some funny manner, perhaps with the billiard ball numbers, Jack's true age or year of birth is given.

IIRC - This sequence is extremely funny, with each of Phil's punchlines perfectly punctuated with a pool shot sound-effect.

April 12, 1953--Mr. Martindale visits Jack, trying to confirm that he's the nephew of "Aunt Matilda," who died and left him $5,000 if he's the right Jack Benny. It's Jack, all right...but the last question is "How old are you?" Jack insists he's 39, but Mr. Martindale (Joe Kearns) says that the Jack Benny he's looking for is 59. Jack won't own up to being 59, so he misses out on the inheritance, but he asks Mary at the end, "How else could you buy twenty years for $5,000?"

Anyone have a date on this one, it sounds funny, and I don't remember ever hearing it.

There is a grace note from the Benny writers when Phil calls a shot, hesitates, then adds with trigonometric precision, "Kiss off the twelve".
Was it the episode where everybody plans a surprise party for Jack, starting with the Beverly Hills Beavers?
That's funny, Norman Krasna loved that joke.

1948-02-15 - Surprise Birthday Party

Mel: Hey, where are you gonna throw the party, Phil?
Phil: Over by- over at my house, everybody's gonna have a lot of fun. I just filled the pool.
Mel: Oh, it's pretty cold weather for swimmin', ain't it?
Phil: Yeah, but once you dive in you don't notice it.
Mel: Oh, is the pool heated?
Phil: No, it's filled with bourbon. Thirteen ball in the side.

1947-12-14 - Jack Has a Sprained Ankle

Mary: Hello, Rochester. How's Mr. Benny?
Rochester: Oh, he's getting along fine, Miss Livingstone. You know, he's in pretty good shape for a man of 38.
Mary: 38? Rochester, Mr. Benny is 53.
Rochester: Well, then how come when he made out his income tax he put down his age as 38?
Mary: The government lets him withhold 20%.

Just watched the tv episode with opera singer Roberts Peters, and Jack states in one part of the show that he has been on televison for 12 to 13 years. Then later he says he wishes he was 30 years younger, then says but wait I am! From all of this his real age should be 69 at the time, minus the 30 years younger crack, would make him his pretend age of 39! I'll tell you though, when he is made up in his opera get up and wig, he really does look to be about 39! Amazing the way he dances around in the episode at 69!

February 23, 1947 (Jack Fires the Sportsmen): Mr. Kitzel gives Jack a belated birthday card with a poem he wrote himself. The poem mentions that Jack's real age is 53, but if he wants to say he's 38, "then that's fine by me."

Just played his Birthday episode on my Podcast from 1936, Jack says, "If life begins at 40, then I'm two years old." At the time Jack was 42.

Here is the link to the episode, I speed corrected it, so it sounds the best I've ever heard it now.
