What are your top 5 Benny episodes?

Postby Jack Benny » Thu Jan 15, 2009 1:14 pm

I was trying to find a best of Benny list in the forum, but couldn't find one. So I thought I would start one. Out of all of Jack's radio shows, which five our your favorites.

Two of my top five are from this week in '39 and '49!

-Lunch at the Brown Derby with Jimmy Stewart from '49

-Lunch Counter from '39 with Ed Beloin and Frank Nelson as the zany lunch counter employees.

-The end of the I hate Jack Benny because... contest from '46?

-The last time Jack played Buck Benny on the radio with Jimmy Stewart '53?

-Snow White from '37

What are yours?
Your pal,
Buck Benny

I listened to this one, based on your list. I loved the "Jackson/jackass" gag by Phil.

Yes, that's a great bit. I think this is also the episode where Jack orders a sandwich from Ed Beloin's character and says, "and hold the ad lib!" - I love that line! After Jack orders coffee Ed asks, "Sanka, Panka, or Smanka?" Jack responds with a laugh and says "Now, you're just showing off!" Next to the episodes with Bob Hope, this is the one episode I would most like to see a "as broadcast" script, so I would know just which lines were scripted and which ones were ad lib.

P.S. Here is a link to the episode with a meandering bad introduction by me. http://jack_benny.podomatic.com/entry/2009-01-15T11_15_09-08_00

Hmmmmmmmmm......................How about:
1. The 1945(?) episode with Cass Daley, in which Verna Felton utter a violently hilarious 'AHHHHHHHHHH....SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" The audience dies laughing.....
2. 11/23/47-The first first complete episode I heard...
3. Any of the General Tire episodes....Too bad that they mostly exist in fragments...
4. 12/24/44-Putting lights on the tree..."PULL IT OOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUT!!"
5. 1/2/49-Frank Nelson's line 'Caught you, DIDN'T I????"
"....and here he is....FRED ALLEN!!!!!!!!!!!!"

You sure it's Frank Nelson? Without looking it up, the lunch counter guys were usually writers Ed Beloin and Bill Morrow.

You are correct, but I think there is at least one with Frank Nelson stepping in for Bill Morrow for some reason.
