I've heard both Don and a generic Jell-O announcer pronounce "deluxe" as de-looks and de-lukes

At the very end of 1941-05-18, for example

I heard a 1952 show today broadcast from Palm Springs on which Jack and the gang used a term I've never heard: "steak ride" (as in "Jack's taking us all on a steak ride"). However, that doesn't seem to be an outdated term--just one not much used this side of the Mississippi. It seems to be a horseback ride to some back-country camp where a crew cooks steaks on an open fire for the riders.

I know today girls call their friends that are girls "girlfriends" but I never heard boyfriend used between men. At least not in that way.

"The Girlfriend of a Boyfriend of Mine." 1930.

I heard Don pronounce "patio" like "potty-o".

My grandmother (not Spanish or Mexican) said "potty-o" and although I've heard plenty of Spanish pronunciations and I know that must be right... it will always sound odd to me.
And in the great 50th state "Ha-wa-ee" vs. "Ha-va-ee" debate... she came down on the side of "Ha-woy-uh"!

"You look like a native, sir. What is the correct pronounciation...Ha-wa-ee or Ha-va-ee?"

"Ha-va-ee"

"Thank you"

"You're Velcome"

Sorry, couldn't resist.
"Hey, Jackson, does Fred Allen always talk through his nose?"

"Yes, Phil. He's the only comedian who tells 'em and smells 'em at the same time!"

Fred Allen - The Big Show

Postby Jhammes » Fri Sep 10, 2010 9:46 am

This is actually from the "Pinch Penny" spoof (NBC Radio's "Big Show" from 11/05/50). Fred Allen does not like faux Don Wilson's intro, and so asks him to "scare up" another opening.
Not sure on this one, so does anyone "scare up" anything anymore?

"Scare up" is a good one... similar to "scrape up" and possibly related to the word "scarce"?
Halloween week (11/05) was a good time for scaring up (although a different meaning.)
I'll bet an Inner Sanctum host played around with "scaring up" AT LEAST once...

Somewhat related to this: The number of announcers who pronounced Los Angeles with a hard "g," as in "angle."

It doesn't happen to be an example of the hard G, but at a former outlet for Jack's show, KFI 640 AM, the current top-of-the-hour sound-bite includes a vintage clip of:
"K-F-I Los Angeles, Earle C. Anthony Incorporated"

In the mid-1980s I belonged to a club where the elderly lady Membership Secretary would read aloud the list of new members each month.
I looked forward to the ones from "Loss Angle Izz"........

Jack Benny's "Lookit..."

Postby Jhammes » Sun Sep 12, 2010 5:35 am

"Lookit"... was that a word that pretty much belonging to Jack (like Willie Mays' "SayHey") or was that a common expression? Never had heard "Lookit" before...

It affects me like fingernails on a chalkboard, but the Orange County (California) politician Todd Spitzer constantly says "Lookit...." when appearing on talk shows-- when re-taking the floor in the discussion. Same as "Listen...." except that Listen is exactly what you want the people to do. To me, Lookit suggests you're pointing to an object.

I'm from Northeastern Illinois, raised about 75 miles south of Waukegan, and we used to say that all the time as kids.

Charles Schulz had heard lookit. There was a Peanuts cartoon (early or mid 60's?) that went a little something like this:
First panel. Sally (or maybe it was Lucy) is skipping rope and says to Charlie Brown, "Lookit me jump rope, Charlie Brown."
Second panel. She says, "Lookit, Lookit, Lookit"
Third panel Charlie Brown (annoyed) says, "I'M LOOKIT ING"
Fourth panel is tight on Charlie Brown looking bewildered and saying "Lookit ing?"
That's funny, Norman Krasna loved that joke.
