Oh, for corn's sake. The game I described was on Sunday, the 7th. That means it's possible the game was over before the Benny show aired at 7pm Eastern. Sorry for the sloppiness on my part, I read the dateline and took it to be the game date.
Mickey Livingston was the Cubs' catcher that day.
And, yes, Laura explains the Greenberg thing in her book:
During the 1945 baseball season, there was a tight pennant race between the Detroit Tigers (Greenberg's team) and the Washington Senators. At one point during the game, Hank Greenberg was on third base and made it safe to home on a hit. However, the hit was ruled a foul ball, and the home plate umpire made Greenberg return to third base where he was later tagged out. However, he came back to hit a grand slam, which put the Tigers 1.5 games ahead of Washington. They went on to win the World Series over the Cubs 4-3.
I'm presuming the game in question was the Sept. 30 match against St. Louis. Greenberg hit one over the left field wall to win it. And the standings who Detroit 1 1/2 games up on Washington, with the Tigers winning the pennant.
