(my first post here)
The back story;
I got in OTR in the 1970’s (I’m 52) & turned into a full blown Jack Benny enthusiast in the 80’s. In the 90’s my brother took a night driver job and asked to borrow some tapes to keep him company - asking which I liked best. I told him JB but he balked. He went through all my other stuff several times until he wanted to hear something different and finally borrowed some JB. I started him with earlier series planning to keep the time line so he’d get the proper affect. Within one week he called and said “WOW – now I see what you were trying to tell me. Between getting to know the characters and the running gags it’s truly incredibly funny stuff – everyone should try this”. I smiled and said “Welcome aboard”
Fast Forward:
Several years ago the whole family decided to draw names for Christmas gifts. - So it’s Christmas – we’re at my fathers – after the gift exchange my brother hands me a package. I said “You didn’t draw my name”. He said “I know don’t worry about it – lets call this a special one - go ahead” . Everyone is quietly watching - I unwrapped the paper – removed the lid from a thin box - pulled open the tissue paper – I saw the back of one of those hanging cardboard package things - Everyone is leaning over for a peek - I pick it up and turn it around and literally fall off the sofa in full blown gut busting laughter. - Bother is beaming - everyone else looks puzzled with heads cocked sideways a little and I’m still rolling. My gift? - Metal Tipped Shoelaces!!
After I calmed down a little he said “You have no idea how hard it was to find these things. Plastic tips are all you can find. I finally ended up on the phone with a shoelace factory out in the mid-west and they got me pointed me to a place on the internet. Before they let me go they told me the proper name for the tips of a shoelace is “aglet”. ---Taah Daah. =)
Chapter Two.
Next Christmas – Same set-up – Bother hands me another box – Everyone watching – I open it and hit the floor again. - It’s a towel – written across it are the words “Acme Plaza Hotel”.
Needles to say I have to return the fun – but it’s going to be tough and I doubt I’ll top it (and don’t really want too).
The idea I’ve come up with is to give him a bottle of “Sympathy Soothing” so I’m making a label to replace one on a bottle of Karo Syrup.
All that said I would like to ask all of you for a little help.
Please chime in with all the Sympathy Soothing tag-lines you can recall.
If you can’t recall many or any – can someone please direct me to the shows so I can re-hear them myself? (I wish there was a data base I could just type in “Sympathy Soothing” or “Ronald Colman” or “Professor LeBlanc” and have it list which shows they were in).
Thank you for reading and I hope someone is able to help a little.
All the Best,
