Jack Benny 411005 broadcast from New York City

Hello! This is my first post on this board.

On my other OTR message boards, I've posted jokes from The Jack Benny radio program that I'm unable to understand. I'm hoping that perhaps people here might be more knowledgeable and can figure some out for me.

Here's my most recent one, from the episode named in the subject above.

Jack and Mary are at Evans (baseball) Field in New York. Jack forgot his glasses and is fumbling to see things. A hot dog vendor approaches Jack.

Vendor: Hot dog, old timer?

JB: Yeah. Where is he? WHERE ARE YOU?

Vendor: Just follow the garlic.

JB: Oh, yes. Gimme 2 hot dogs.

Vendor: You want a regular or the king size?

[big laugh from audience]

JB: The regular is all right.

***

I'm not sure why the audience laughed at that, mostly because they laughed louder than usual. Do you get it?

This doesn't seem to merit the response from that episode, but my only thought is he would never splurge for the king size.

Thank you KB, for replying. I wondered if I'd stumped everyone.

I think you're right about the laugh being bigger than it would have been for a joke about Jack being cheap. (I also think they would have set it up a little differently for that kind of joke.)
