I just listened to the 12-21-41 Christmas episode and Jack is quite proud to annouce that Rodney Dangerfield will be one of the guests. Seems only Jack and Phil have ever seen one of his movies. I love the bit about Phil beating Jack (without knowing it was him) with his licorice at particularly exciting part of the movie. Apparently he's right up there with Hootch Horowitz in Phil's cowboy star pantheon.
I'm pretty sure I've heard the name in later episodes and it got me to wonder if this was where the perpetually disrespected comic got his name.
The wikipedia listing for comedian Dangerfield (born Jacob Cohen) finds this:
"He took the name Rodney Dangerfield, which had been used as the comical name of a faux cowboy star by Jack Benny on his radio program at least as early as the December 21, 1941, broadcast and later as a pseudonym by Ricky Nelson on the TV program The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. However, Jack Roy remained his legal name, as he mentioned from time to time. During a question-and-answer session with the audience on the album No Respect, Rodney joked that his real name was Percival Sweetwater."
Coincidentally, Ed Sullivan gave Rodney his big break, yet another JB connection.
Jack's shows through the years are an endless source for "THAT's where that came from?" wow moments, usually regarding connections to Warner Bros. cartoons, but this one really surprised me.
Like an onion this show is, layer upon layer.
