: That show is one of the true gems of my radio show collection (at least from a historical standpoint)...but I am amazed at how different Jack's character is on the show. He's actually something of a wise guy....more like Bob Hope or Milton Berle.
: He has wisecracks about the other cast members, the musical numbers, etc. In later years Jack would also make fun of people and other aspects of the show, but it wasn't done quite so brashly as on this first Canada Dry show.
: I've also heard early Chevrolet and General Tire programs, and Jack definitely toned down the "wise guy" persona but that time, so I'm assuming that he didn't stick with it very long on radio.
: Has anyone else noticed a very different Jack on the Canada Dry series?
Yes I have! I think the most amazing thing is listening to Jack before the "cheap" persona is developed. I would guess that the "wise guy" image was standard fare in vaudeville. Also hearing Mary as the "dumb kid". Talk about a shock when compared to the Mary we all know and love on the later shows.
