Actually, Jack WAS a smoker. Cigars for most of his life, and I think cigarettes occasionally. Mary was a smoker (but not Lucky Strikes, and their contract with the American Tobacco Company had a clause in it that didn't require her to either smoke Luckies or always to be seen smoking Lucky Strikes in public.)
On various shows in the 1930s and early 1940s, you'll hear references to Jack's cigar-smoking.
Jack also appeared in holiday print ads for Lucky Strikes, as did Bing Crosby for Chesterfields.
On the whole, though, I think he much preferred that the public remembered him for hawking Jell-O. There's a memorable gag about that in one of his "Lucy Show" appearances!
