The joke spoofed the then-legal, now-outlawed practice of comedians who mentioned actual products on the air in order to get free stuff. At the time the electric blanket gag was used (I think the early 1950s), the practice was well-known; it's one of the relatively few topical gags used on the Benny programs. I think writer Milt Josefsberg, in his book, recalled that the entire staff received GE electric blankets after the gag was aired. The practice was outlawed by the end of the 1950s.
