: Jack was great on Suspense.

Yes, Bob DID play it straight on "Suspense" and similar dramatic anthology shows where a studio audience was not present....The problem used to occur when he was appearing on a lighter type of anthology show in front of a studio audience ("Lux Radio Theatre", "Screen Director's Playhouse", etc.).
In THOSE instances, Bob was like the class clown who had an audience of classmates to "play" to. Most of the time those lighter plays WERE comedies, but they were comedies where the actors needed to stay "in character" and stick to a storyline...and when Bob would digress with those "as himself" comments, it would often destroy the illusion of the character and play being performed.
