Earliest Known Jack Benny Recording Available
Thanks to John Newton of the Vitaphone Project, the IJBFC has added the earliest known recording of Jack Benny to its holdings. John is the owner of the only known copy of a soundtrack disc from Bright Moments, Jack's first film, a Vitaphone one-reeler released on July 30, 1928. Unfortunately the accompanying film is still in the "lost" category, but we'll keep our fingers crossed that it shows itself some day.
In the meantime, you can hear a few minutes of Jack doing a monologue, and cracking wise about the thriftiness of Scotchmen (before he himself became the famous cheapskate). While Mary Livingstone also appeared in the movie (as dumb-dora character Marie Marsh), the soundtrack disc is only of the first part of the movie and features only Jack.
This is available in cassette format from the IJBFC library. For complete library ordering instructions, click here. Again, our thanks to John for providing us with this wonderful, historical Benny recording! For more information on the Vitaphone project, visit their Web site at http://www.picking.com/vitaphone.html
