In Memoriam: Ray Erlenborn 1915-2007
Anyone who met Ray Erlenborn was certain never to forget him, and for good reason. Ray did sound effects for the Benny television program, and even appeared on screen with Jack to demonstrate (quite dramatically!) how sound effects are produced. Ray also had a host of other credits (check out his IMDB listing), including voicing Rabbit for Winnie the Pooh. Ray and his wife Meridy are two of the most delightful folks that I had the pleasure of meeting in my Benny research, and I treasure the time that I was able to spend with them.
Also a side note...Ray did extensive long-distance coaching of Charlie Willer for the sound effects for our radio show recreation at the Waukegan celebration for the unveiling of the Benny statue. Ray was Charlie's greatest idol, and he was breathless at the opportunity to work with him, even via E-mail. Sadly, we lost Charlie a couple years ago. When I heard of Ray's passing, my first thought was that Charlie would definitely be among the crowd to welcome Ray to the other side.
