Brad Strickland

Hi, Laura, Tom.

Tom Vorce
Hi Brad!

Laura Leibowitz
Hey Brad!

Brad Strickland
Stride says I need to get out and restart to get the slickest Stride ever. Wish me luck!

Laura Leibowitz
Is it hot where you are?
Good luck!

Tom Vorce
91 degrees today.

Brad Strickland
So here I am! Hey, it’s the same temp here, or was.

R.Hookie
Good evening folks!

Laura Leibowitz
It was cooler today than the past couple days, but it was still hot working in the sun.
Hi there Hookie!

R.Hookie
Hi there Laura

Laura Leibowitz
Hi Michael!
Gee good turnout right at the top of the hour.

Tom Vorce
Hello Hookie!

Brad Strickland
I may babble on more than usual. No sleep hardly. The neighborhood starting shooting fireworks off on June 30th, and were still at it last night--as late as two AM last night, one night it went on until FIVE. Hi, Hookie, Michael.

R.Hookie
Hey Tom

Garth Johnson
Here we are again Happy as can be All good pals and jolly good company

R.Hookie

Hey Brad

Laura Leibowitz
Hookie - You’ll probably get the prize for coolest local temperature.

Michael Golek
Got in. Thanks for the help Laura!

R.Hookie
Let me check…

Laura Leibowitz
Hey Garth! Nice rendition of the Canada Dry theme…

Brad Strickland
Hi, Garth!
Looking out my window at our backyard thermometer: About 87 degrees now.

Tom Vorce
Hello Garth & Michael!

Brad Strickland
We’ve got enough cardinals around our bird feeders to elect a bird Pope.

Laura Leibowitz
Man, I miss cardinals.

Brad Strickland
Me, too, but my aim is getting better.
Nah, I love the little red demons.

R.Hookie
86/feels like 91
Temperature

Michael Golek
It’s hot in Detroit, but we have an ice cream truck with soft serve that comes most evenings.

Brad Strickland
It’s fun to watch the squirrels. Odd thing--two squirrels get along, share the food they rob from the feeders, everything’s calm. Another squirrel comes over and they all immediately begin fighting each other. Three-way squirrel brawl.

Tom Vorce
I miss those ice cream trucks. So nostalgic!

Brad Strickland
I think when they’re three each one suspects one of the others is a narc.
We still have an ice-cream truck that comes around every afternoon. But I think it sells fireworks.
Right now there are three late-afternoon cardinals right outside my window, two females and a male. And I’ve seen as many as ten out there before. A solo squirrel just came walking along the top of the fence and scared the cardinals away. Such is the struggle for existence.

R.Hookie
Did the room stop or is my internet out?

Laura Leibowitz
The room froze up on me and I had to re-enter

Brad Strickland
Annnd…here comes another squirrel. Weird. Maybe they’re Benny fans. You getting this, Hookie?
Must be cold where you are!

R.Hookie
I see you

Brad Strickland
Squirrel number three just showed up, and they’re bare-knuckling it! What a fight, ladies and gentlemen, what a fight!

Tom Vorce
I was trying to be quiet for Laura’s crowd control. LOL

R.Hookie
No not cold… A/C set to 73

Michael Golek
Brad - Tell those pesky squirrels, “Now cut that out.”

Laura Leibowitz

We’ll give it to 10 after and then start the program

Brad Strickland
They can’t hear me.

Laura Leibowitz
Sic Carmichael on them

Brad Strickland
And now they’ve all gone over the fence, and two of the cardinals return to the feeder….
Honestly, I don’t know why two squirrels are fine and three create a fight. It’s like the story where Bulgarians go to a hotel to have a party. Each one takes a separate hotel room and a bottle of vodka.

Garth Johnson
You need to hire Joe Lewis as a guard for the feeder

Brad Strickland
I ought to let the cats out, is what. But they go for the birds, too.

Laura Leibowitz
I just invested in a feeder that has a spring at the bottom
Has been successful in keeping out the squirrels thus far

R.Hookie
***joke cancelled mid-type***

Brad Strickland
Anybody else been sick? Barbara and I have had this upper-respiratory crud for two weeks. Laura, I have one of those, too. The squirrels have learned to cling to the wooden fence, do a back bend, and keep their weight off the plunger in order to shake the birdseed out. Then they go down to the ground for their ill-gotten grains.

Garth Johnson
Hookie – She sprung for the spring?

R.Hookie
That’s a good one
(A Spring? Don’t they like bird seed?)
See… it killed the room

Brad Strickland
The feeder has this little platform that is held to the grain bin by a spring. A squirrel is so heavy that the platform comes down, covering the access to the seed. Birds are light enough not to spring the spring.

Laura Leibowitz
Sorry, I’ve got a bunch of people asking for help to get in.

Brad Strickland
Let 'em in. Fresh meat.

Garth Johnson
For some reason I have a mental picture of the Road Runner and the Coyote planning some nefarious scheme

Brad Strickland
Meep! Meep!

Tom Vorce
Wow. Now I know more about bird feeders than I ever imagined!

R.Hookie
Are you charging admission?

Brad Strickland
One squirrel is back. The victor, I guess. Annnnd there he goes with the backbend, and there goes a shower of sunflower seeds. Little furry jerk.
I don’t know. Honestly. Once in Yosemite I saw a squirrel dragging a whole Pop-Tart style pastry up a tree. Backwards. What is this world coming to?
It’s getting dark, or I’d try to get some photos of these vandals.
This squirrel is the one I call Scruffy. I recognize them by their tails. The other two are Fluffy and Stumpy.

Tom Vorce
I don’t have squirrels here, only chipmunks. I guess I should be thankful!

Brad Strickland
Chipmunks are cute. One once mistook my wife for a tree.
Now Fluffy has joined Scruffy and they’re policing the patio for scattered seeds. At least they clean up after themselves.
Who was it who had a parakeet she called Onan because he spilled his seed on the ground?

Laura Leibowitz
Sorry, been trying to get additional people into the room

R.Hookie
They forgot their keys?

Brad Strickland
Just looked it up. The Onan-the-Parakeet lady was Dorothy Parker.

Laura Leibowitz
OK, let’s get the show on the road.

Garth Johnson
Irving was just doing his job protecting the vault - not everybody can just walk in

Brad Strickland
Now Scruffy’s shaking my squirrel-proof feeder, emptying it on the ground. Sigh.

Michael Golek
Garth - It was the polar bear’s day off.

Garth Johnson
Other Vault

Brad Strickland
Where do we see the other names? This new version of Stride doesn’t have the name panel on the right, at least not for me.

Laura Leibowitz
You can click on the people icon and it should show them to you

Brad Strickland
Ah, never mind, found it. But I get everybody who’s ever been on. I guess the green circles are those who are present. Five at the moment.

Laura Leibowitz
Yep

Brad Strickland
I heard just a little snippet of an interview with Jack on XM radio last week. He was explaining that the character he played just gradually developed: “It wasn’t something we planned. We just found out what the audiences liked and gradually the character emerged.”

Brad Strickland
Still some folks waiting admittance, Laura?

Brad Strickland
Is this thing on?
Gee, now we’re down to just three? It’s the plague!
Now I’m the only one here? Last man standing? Is it something I said?

Garth Johnson
Brad - I think we timed-out due to inactivity while watching the Shower Of Stars - Just popped over and noticed I was not ‘Available'

Laura Leibowitz
Welcome back, folks!

R.Hookie
That was fun

Brad Strickland
Yeah, I got that. Had trouble getting the link to work--kept clicking, nothing would happen, so I guess it was frozen. Worked the last time, though.

Garth Johnson
Portions of the program were filmed at Studio 33, CBS Television City - if you believe IMDB

Laura Leibowitz
Yes, I actually had not see it previously!

Tom Vorce
The court room scene was wonderful!

Laura Leibowitz
Garth - That does make sense. I was guessing it was Studio 33 as well.

Michael Golek
Boy they went to the trouble of installing that piano in the judge’s bench for a brief gag.

Laura Leibowitz
I didn’t realize Liberace also did soft shoe.
I knew he was light in the loafers, but…

Brad Strickland
I didn’t know George could talk.

Laura Leibowitz
Right
What other thoughts on the show?

Michael Golek
I believe Jack’s service in the Navy was linked to his taking the stage name “Jack Benny”. What’s the story?

Brad Strickland
I seem to recall when I was a mere boy that Liberace had a late-afternoon TV show. May be wrong, though.

Laura Leibowitz
Wedlock and Snyder were pretty good substitutes for the regular writers. They knew Jack’s character well.

R.Hookie
I think I have this and another Shower of Stars on a DVD

Laura Leibowitz
Who would like to answer Michael’s question?

Garth Johnson

Brad Strickland
Well, a naval recruit is often called a jack, and his name was Benjamin….no, that’s not right at all.

R.Hookie
Who answer what?

Brad Strickland
I think his first stage name was Ben Benny, right? Then Ben K. Benny?

Laura Leibowitz
How Jack’s naval career influenced his taking of the name Jack.

Garth Johnson
One story is Ben and Benny Rubin were talking

Laura Leibowitz
Salisbury and Benny, then Benny and Woods, then Ben K. Benny
Garth - Yeah, that one.

Brad Strickland
Ben Benny first, 'cause Ben Bernie complained.

Michael Golek
Bad luck picking that name.

Laura Leibowitz
Yes, I think I’ve traced the vaudeville listings to where someone mucked up the names and put Ben Bernie instead of Ben Benny.
Well, they were Salisbury and Kubelsky until violinist Jan Kubelik complained.
Go ahead Garth…tell the story.

Brad Strickland
Jack once told Johnny Carson that his real family name wasn’t Kubelsky, because it was shortened at Ellis Island. It was originally O’Kubelsky. “We were Irish,” he said.

Laura Leibowitz
I think he ripped that gag off from Mr. Kitzel

Michael Golek
Haha.

Brad Strickland
“Only on my mother’s side. Full-blooded, I’m not.”

Laura Leibowitz
Not sure if Garth is busy typing or if we lost him…

Brad Strickland
Garth has a green button. Probably typing the story.

Laura Leibowitz
Resisting stepping on him…
Basically, I don’t put full faith in Benny Rubin’s story because…it’s a showbiz story. And people in showbiz focus way more on what sounds good than what actually happened.

R.Hookie
… tea for two and two for tea…

Garth Johnson
The stage name history - in brief - Salisbury and Kubelsky and violinist Kublick complained, so he became Ben K Benny the fidling kid – then Benny and Bernie got confusing so for a while he was Ben Benny or Ben K Benny depending on how Variety printed things. When Bernie complained he talked things over with Benny Rubin they noticed they were calling each other Jack and while he didn’t like Jack to begin with it stuck…

Laura Leibowitz
The Navy guys would call each other Jack

Brad Strickland
I’ve noticed that, too, Laura!

Michael Golek
Thanks Garth and Laura.

Laura Leibowitz
Sure.
Any requests for next time?

Brad Strickland
“Most of the Navy guys called each other ‘Jack.’ My commanding officer used a variation of that for me . . . and that’s how I got my stage name: Jerk Benny.”
Well, I’d like the folks in the neighborhood to stop shooting off fireworks.

Laura Leibowitz
I’ll second that here as well.
OK, so no Honeymooners episodes.
(Fireworks in the opening titles)

Garth Johnson
How about a European Vacation

Tom Vorce
Love, American Style?

Brad Strickland
Any august type performances? As in decorous, dignified?

Laura Leibowitz
Carnegie Hall Salutes Jack Benny

Brad Strickland
Is there any filmed record of Jack’s performing with an orchestra?

Laura Leibowitz
But Jack’s part in that is pretty small. Most of it is serious music performance.

Garth Johnson
Right

Laura Leibowitz
Yes, there are a few. One we used here a few months back: 60-Piece Orchestra Bit

Michael Golek
Jack refused to poke fun at the serious violinists.

Laura Leibowitz
Because he admired them so!

Brad Strickland
I’ve heard my music-teacher colleague (now retired from teaching and writing music for the movies!) tell about Jack’s appearance with his orchestra. It sounded great.

Laura Leibowitz
About as close as you get to that is Hollywood Canteen with Josef Szigeti
Yes, I have a short interview somewhere with a musician who did one of those with Jack. Would have loved to have seen it.
I like the Europe show idea…I may use that.
Anything else Benny-wise on your minds tonight?

Brad Strickland
I just recently reconnected with Butch. He’s living out in Arizona. By the way, he ALSO has a Vincent Price connection: one summer he was a musician for a touring company of “Oliver!” in which Price played Fagan.

Garth Johnson
Does any concert violinist know “Love in Bloomioso”

Laura Leibowitz
You know, whenever I go to see Stuart Canin perform, I always resist saying, “Play the Bee!” during the applause.

Brad Strickland
Tut. I just realized I misspelled “Fagin.” And me an English teacher.

Laura Leibowitz
Brad - That must have been cool.
Tsk tsk
OK…shall we call it good for this month?

Brad Strickland
He says Price stayed in a four-dollar-a-day motel. He explained that he got the difference in extra pay--and saved up to by art.
It’s good. It’s all good. There.

Laura Leibowitz
OK, thanks for stopping, folks! Have a good July and keep cool!

R.Hookie
Good night folks! See you soon!

Brad Strickland
Goodbye!

Michael Golek
Good night all!

Tom Vorce
Goodnight all. Stay cool!!
