[5:04 PM] Laura Leibowitz: It's chiss sweeze!
[5:04 PM] R.Hookie: I've been dozing all day
[5:05 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Hookie - That's OK.  Seth seems to be making a tradition of taking a nap while I'm here.
[5:05 PM] Tom Vorce: Hi everyone!
[5:05 PM] Laura Leibowitz: We'll give a few more minutes for people to get on the line...
[5:07 PM] Laura Leibowitz: So how's everyone doing tonight?
[5:07 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Hi Tom!
[5:07 PM] Roger: Doing fine!
[5:07 PM] Theodore Michael Konek: I'm well! Glad to be here!
[5:08 PM] R.Hookie: Fine... Watching Newhart waiting for the chat to start
[5:08 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: yay.... so happy to be a Benny fan : )
[5:08 PM] R.Hookie: That rhymes
[5:08 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Seth showed me a Three Stooges short, so I showed him Laurel and Hardy's "Big Business."
[5:08 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Hi Stan!
[5:09 PM] Tom Vorce: I love Laurel & Hardy!
[5:09 PM] Stan Korwin: hi . made it just in time
[5:09 PM] Roger: R. Hookie - Must be watching Antenna TV.
[5:09 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Welcome in!
[5:09 PM] Stan Korwin: thx
[5:09 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: one of my colleagues has L&H shorts shot in foreign languages for overseas distribution. L&H not so good at the "Hola amigo" part
[5:09 PM] R.Hookie: Yes, I am
[5:09 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Kathy - They dance pretty well to Santana.
[5:09 PM] Laura Leibowitz: OK, let's do it...
[5:10 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: haha and they dance well to Uptown Funk!
[5:10 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Tonight's show includes Mary's chiss sweeze blooper
[5:10 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Kathy - Yes, love that montage!
[5:10 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: yay!!!!!
[5:10 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Here's the link:  https://www.watch2gether.com/rooms/ijbfc-mbrm7osc3l5p85x3t9
[5:10 PM] Roger: It wasn't until I dropped my cable subscription that I watch Antenna TV. Local channel broadcast it locally.
[5:10 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: That video remix gets applause from my 200 undergrads when I show it on the last day of class, yay
[5:10 PM] Laura Leibowitz: If anyone joins the chat after we start the show, please join us at the above link!
[5:42 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Welcome back, folks1
[5:42 PM] R.Hookie: Yes, that was fun
[5:42 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: what a wonderful episode! thanks for playing it
[5:42 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Sure...credit to whomever suggested using one of the famous blooper shows.
[5:42 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: I just love that while we may remember it for Chiss Sweeze, it has so much going on
[5:43 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Yeah!  I was marvelling at that as well!
[5:43 PM] Laura Leibowitz: 10/27/46 for anyone reading the transcript at a more convenient time.
[5:43 PM] Stan Korwin: A good mix of all the regulars.
[5:43 PM] Tom Vorce: That was great, but I was bothered by those darn pop-up ads, too.
[5:43 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: and to think that audiences would have had to KNOW so much about the show to understand all the jokes
[5:43 PM] Laura Leibowitz: My money says that George and Sam wrote the second half.
[5:43 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Eastern Columbia, Broadway at Ninth
[5:43 PM] Laura Leibowitz: A lot of current-day references
[5:44 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Greenberg's on third
[5:44 PM] Laura Leibowitz: What other thoughts on the show?
[5:44 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: and that the Sportsmen were teh Number One new addition to comedy shows in Fall 1946, they got so much press
[5:45 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Hats off to Mahlon...he'd been looking to use them since at least 1940.
[5:45 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: I love that Jack could JUMP out of character to call out Mary on her mistake. He was otherwise so kind to her
[5:45 PM] Laura Leibowitz: It sounds like she's actually still somewhat relaxed and having fun on this show.
[5:46 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: Variety magazine said the Sportsmen were the Number ONE new addition to prime time radio comedy (otherwise too much the same) in Fall 1946
[5:46 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Indeed!
[5:46 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Unless anyone feels strongly, I think I know what I want to use for next month's show.
[5:47 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: what? I want to know!
[5:47 PM] R.Hookie: A tie-in?
[5:47 PM] Laura Leibowitz: So what else Benny-wise is on everyone's mind?
[5:47 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Hookie - Actually, I hadn't thought of that.  Would be open to it.
[5:47 PM] Laura Leibowitz: I was thinking Drear Pooson.
[5:47 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: oh I LOVE that Dreer Poosen episode!
[5:48 PM] R.Hookie: Don't let me influence you
[5:48 PM] Laura Leibowitz: I suppose it ties in well with Kathy's cover photo!
[5:48 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: haha I hope so !
[5:48 PM] Laura Leibowitz: So any questions, Benny trivia, stories, etc.?
[5:48 PM] Roger: was 1946, one of Benny's better seasons on radio?
[5:49 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Roger - It's rather subjective, depending on what you like in the Benny show.
[5:49 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: I am so anxious and happy to have the Benny hive mind's take on my book. Jim has already found one tyop in an incorrect date on a photo, I want to make it bette
[5:49 PM] Laura Leibowitz: A number of people point to 1948, since that's the year of "your money or your life"
[5:49 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: better haha
[5:50 PM] Laura Leibowitz: The "new writers" were definitely getting traction, and hadn't started worrying about TV yet.
[5:50 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Kathy - I will as well!  You've got a posse for it...
[5:50 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: But I will ALWAYS argue that there are so many wonderful Benny moments and bits, can we spread the word on 1932-1936 and 1936-1940?
[5:50 PM] R.Hookie: Sorry... got a bit of a distraction going on here
[5:50 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Kathy - I'm totally with you on 1936-1940.  That's my favorite time.
[5:50 PM] Roger: Some one posted an article from a 1935 interview of Jack worrying about how he will look on TV.  I thought that was odd since he was in pictures.
[5:50 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Hookie - Hi Penny
[5:51 PM] R.Hookie: Yep
[5:51 PM] Roger: That pre WWII years are my favorite myself
[5:51 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: I have not put out "recreated broadcasts" of 1932-1936 yet. I got spooked that it would not sound like Benny.
[5:51 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Kathy - A lot of people have a mental block on the writing of Harry Conn.  Garbo and George Bernard Shaw jokes don't age well.
[5:52 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Kathy - Oh I definitely think it should be out there for people who are interested in them.
[5:52 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: So I am thinking of making early script bits available and starting a CONTEST to see who might make a recreation podcast, with prizes of glory, and copies of the book and such'..
[5:52 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Oh I like it!
[5:53 PM] R.Hookie: That would be fun
[5:53 PM] Laura Leibowitz: I'd be interested if Conn can find a niche market again
[5:53 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: so, I am really into the contest idea. and that totally jives with Jack's Canada Dry broadcasts from summer 1932, in which he started all kinds of contests
[5:53 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Very much in the spirit of the Depression-era giveaways.
[5:54 PM] Laura Leibowitz: I wanna do boarding house night.
[5:54 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Cross the desert, and we'll give you a free Canada Dry.
[5:54 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: Laura, you will be so happy to learn about our Club member Ben Schwartz, whom I met through our website; he is writing a wonderful book that will emphasize the vaudeville aspects of Benny's career
[5:55 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Ah yes, he mentioned that he had gotten a grant!  I need to get back in touch with him.
[5:55 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Becoming a tenor in San Francisco Bach Choir and having a new boyfriend has put a damper on my E-mail time... ;)
[5:55 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: and I am so excited about this Keith-Albee archive opening up for us to search, great to see Jack in his formative years. And to learn more about Fink's Mules
[5:56 PM] Laura Leibowitz: I know!  What an incredible treasure trove!
[5:56 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: hey Laura, that is all GREAT news! Benny will wind a thread throughout our busy lives
[5:56 PM] Laura Leibowitz: A far cry from me ruining my eyes rolling through microfilm of Variety at the San Francisco Public Library.
[5:57 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Amen to that.  And, of course, it's great that we have so many folks--like all of you--who are involved in one way or another in furthering the research and helping carry the torch for Jack!
[5:57 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: you bet! Nothing beats digitized. Except for text-scannable. I have been spreading the word on that Iowa collection, and Trav SD did not know of it either, so its all great!
[5:58 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Big thumbs up.
[5:58 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: the Benny hive mind is so fantastic!
[5:58 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Jack inspires really good people.
[5:58 PM] Laura Leibowitz: OK, so are we good for this month?  Anything else to discuss?
[5:58 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: I so totally agree! Everyone but the UCLA special collections archivisits, hahahaha
[5:58 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Kathy - Yepper, I hear ya sistah!
[5:59 PM] Laura Leibowitz: OK, thanks for stopping folks!  A joy to be able to share that show with you.
[5:59 PM] Laura Leibowitz: I'll see you all in November!
[5:59 PM] Roger: Thank You Laura!
[5:59 PM] Kathy Fuller Seeley: yay! hope to catch up with you in person soon!
[5:59 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Would love that!
[5:59 PM] R.Hookie: OK...good night folks!
[6:00 PM] Roger: Hope to meet you all in person someday.
[6:00 PM] Tom Vorce: Good night, folks!
