IJBFC Chat - July 9, 2017

(Name of message originator appears right after the timestamp)

[5:12 PM] Floyd Riggle: That's right folks although I live right next door to Anaheim, Azusa and Cucamonga - Jack never came here if there was a fire. :)
[5:12 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Tonight I selected a George Burns and Gracie Allen television episode that has Jack as a guest star (4/24/52 Jack steals George's joke:  https://youtu.be/aCwJSjX17fE).
[5:43 PM] Floyd Riggle: Hello back at the CHAT ROOM
[5:43 PM] Perri: Hiyo!
[5:44 PM] Floyd Riggle: Laura - that was an excellent selection.
[5:44 PM] Floyd Riggle: I had never seen that before.
[5:44 PM] Perri: Nor I - yes, very nice!
[5:45 PM] Beverly Bennett: Fun, thank you!
[5:45 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Sorry, had to restart my browser
[5:45 PM] Laura Leibowitz: What was it that you didn't think could be done today, Floyd?
[5:45 PM] Floyd Riggle: Funny script - I must say that had it been a BENNY show with Guest Fred Allen coming to LA on the Train.
That would have been drop dead funny
[5:46 PM] Laura Leibowitz: And I don't think Ralph Levy was directing Jack's shows yet, but I'd have to look it up to be sure.
[5:46 PM] Floyd Riggle: I don't think that a Entertainment show (like Burns and Allen) no a sponsor (Like Carnation) could get away with something like that.
Too close to bein an endorcement.
[5:46 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Oh, working the commercials in like that?
[5:47 PM] Laura Leibowitz: What of Don Wilson's promotion of Jell-O?
[5:47 PM] Laura Leibowitz: What other thoughts on the show?
[5:47 PM] Floyd Riggle: I remember that being done up through the early 60's (Andy Griffith, Benny, )   I kind of miss that to this day.
[5:47 PM] Floyd Riggle: First the show was great quality - a lot are not that clear
[5:47 PM] Perri: it worked--I'm ready for custard now... https://www.verybestbaking.com/recipes/29738/baked-custard
[5:47 PM] Floyd Riggle: Same for the sound quality
[5:47 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Yeah, I can't remember the industry term for the distribution of ad time to many sponsors.
[5:48 PM] Laura Leibowitz: In these days, the sponsors were buying the airtime and then put on whatever show(s) they had.
[5:48 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Perri - Ah, but does it call for 2/3 cup Carnation Evap Milk and 1/3 cup water?  That's the difference, y'know.
[5:49 PM] Perri: that one throws in the whole can!
[5:49 PM] Laura Leibowitz: With a whole cup of water...somewhat higher ratio!
[5:50 PM] Perri: Those Jell-O adds get me going, too.  :-)
[5:50 PM] Perri: ads
[5:50 PM] Floyd Riggle: Someone said "GOOD SAVE" about Gracie - SOrry I missed the flub - what was the error and the save?
[5:50 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Oh, I think you know my story on them while writing Volume 1.  :)
[5:50 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Oh, she fluffed a line slightly about Jack coming over but she carried on very smoothly and corrected it.
[5:51 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Just mixed up the words a bit initially
[5:51 PM] Floyd Riggle: So smoothly I didn't catch that :)
[5:51 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Real pro.
[5:51 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Other thoughts on the show, or other Benny topics?
[5:52 PM] Laura Leibowitz: We're down to just the three of us...any requests for next month?
[5:52 PM] Floyd Riggle: Interesting, I caught at the end.  I knew that when Jack started TV
[5:52 PM] Floyd Riggle: that he did it once a month, then once every two weeks.  Did not know
[5:52 PM] Floyd Riggle: That George and Gracie did that too
[5:52 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Yes, it was very sporadic (or much less often) before the coast-to-coast coax.
[5:53 PM] Floyd Riggle: Requests for next month -  - - Video or the Old Radio Shows?
[5:53 PM] Laura Leibowitz: You were forced to go and do the shows in New York.
[5:53 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Floyd - Either way.
[5:54 PM] Perri: Try a listen together with a radio show?
[5:54 PM] Floyd Riggle: I remember Jack making that trip all the time.
Now when they did that NYC production - was it shown LIVE in NYC at the time (or east coast). Then they'd distribute the filmed Kineoscope
[5:54 PM] Laura Leibowitz: OK, will do.  I'll either find one that's already up there or figure out how to add a photo to one.
[5:55 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Yes, it was shown live as far as the coax went.  Some shows might opt for "recording for broadcast at a more convenient time," and places without direct coax to NY had to wait for the kinescope copy.
[5:55 PM] Floyd Riggle: If I could suggest (if radio) do Suspense.  Jack did two of their radio shows.
1 - he is a piano repair man that ends up switching his case with a bank robber.
2. - he's the martian in charge of the meet and greet for the first Earth landing on Mars
[5:56 PM] Laura Leibowitz: He actually did a couple more than that.
[5:56 PM] Laura Leibowitz: The Face is Familiar
[5:56 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Those two are Murder in G Flat and Plan X
[5:56 PM] Laura Leibowitz: I'm trying to remember the other one.  Oh well.
[5:56 PM] Perri: Sounds like fun!
[5:57 PM] Floyd Riggle: On Suspense - I must check for those.  He was great in Murder and Plan X
I'll do a search see if I can find them - wonderful episodes.
[5:57 PM] Laura Leibowitz: I don't think we've done Murder in G Flat.  And Face is Familiar was even redone for TV!
[5:57 PM] Floyd Riggle: Face is familiar was done for TV as Suspense starring Jack?
[5:57 PM] Perri: I've heard Murder and Face, but not Plan X
[5:57 PM] Laura Leibowitz: It's funny...I love those shows too, but people seem to feel much like they do about the New Year's plays.
[5:58 PM] Laura Leibowitz: GE Theatre.  11/21/54
[5:58 PM] Floyd Riggle: Really - those New Year's episodes where he plays the old year - I always thought those were well done.
[5:58 PM] Floyd Riggle: GE Theatre 11/21/54 - thanks
[5:58 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Perri - Jack Benny as an alien.  Very through the looking glass.
[5:58 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Floyd - And I enjoy them too!  It's like a little composite history lesson.
[5:59 PM] Laura Leibowitz: But I'm not a fan of Si-Sy, and just about everyone but me is crazy for it.
[5:59 PM] Perri: Yes! Coulda met Jet Benny...heh!
[5:59 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Perri - :p
[5:59 PM] Floyd Riggle: Jack's job is escalators.  Everyone is analyzed with a test to know they best traits.  He also was the one found to be the best if anyone came from another planet.
[5:59 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Hey, you all would make me turn it off pretty darned fast I think.
[6:00 PM] Laura Leibowitz: That could be an interesting chat room drinking game though...
[6:00 PM] Laura Leibowitz: That was the only way I got through it the one time I did.
[6:01 PM] Laura Leibowitz: OK, I'll see what I can do to have a Suspense for next month.
[6:01 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Anything else, or should we call it good?
[6:01 PM] Floyd Riggle: HA HA HA.   Too bad Jack died to soon.  I would have loved to see him get beemed up to the Enterprise and deal with SPOCK.
[6:01 PM] Perri: :-D
[6:01 PM] Floyd Riggle: I'm good
[6:01 PM] Laura Leibowitz: Oh the mental image is priceless.
[6:02 PM] Perri: Yes--looking forward to next month!
[6:02 PM] Laura Leibowitz: OK, thanks folks!  Appreciate you stopping by tonight!  I'll see you next month I hope.
[6:02 PM] Floyd Riggle: Bye for now
[6:02 PM] Perri: Good night!
